Description: Powder for solution for injection.

Presentation: Vial-10, €100.37.

Indication: Prophylaxis of post-operative endophthalmitis after cataract surgery.

Pharmacology: Cefuroxime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis following attachment to penicillin binding proteins, which leads to bacterial cell lysis and death.

Dosage: Adult: Administer 0.1ml (1mg) by intracameral injection at the end of cataract surgery. Elderly: As per adults. Children: Not recommended.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to cefuroxime or to cephalosporins.

Special precautions: Caution: Prior allergic reaction to penicillins or any other beta-lactams. Consider alternative prophylactic antibiotic in patients at risk for infections with resistant strains. Only use after careful risk/benefit assessment: Patients with severe risk of infection, complicated cataracts, combined operations with cataract surgery, severe thyroid disease, or <2000 corneal endothelial cells. Monitor for corneal endothelial toxicity (potential risk).
