Description: Solution for injection in single dose auto-injector.
Presentation: 150mcg-1, €36.15; 300mcg-1, €36.15; 500mcg-1, €36.75.
Indications: Emergency treatment of anaphylaxis caused by foods, drugs, insect stings/bites, and other allergens as well as exercise induced or idiopathic anaphylaxis.
Pharmacology: Adrenaline is a sympathomimetic hormone which stimulates both α- and β- adrenergic receptors. It has a potent vasoconstrictive effect through its α-adrenergic stimulation which effect counteracts the vasodilatation and increased vascular perfusion leading to low intravascular flow and hypotension. It alleviates wheezing and dyspnea through its stimulation of bronchial β-receptors.
Dosage: Adult: 300-500mcg by single intramuscular injection into anterolateral thigh. If required repeat dose after 5-15 minutes. Seek immediate medical attention following administration. Elderly: As per adults. Children: Over 30kg, 300mcg. Between 15-30kg, 150mcg. Under 15kg, not recommended unless life-threatening situation and under medical advice. 500mcg, not recommended.
Contraindications: None in allergic emergency.
Special precautions: Do not inject into buttock. Caution: Heart diseases (including angina pectoris, cardiac arrhythmia, cor pulmonale, obstructive cardiomyopathy, atherosclerosis). Hyperthyroidism, hypertension, phaeochromocytoma, glaucoma, severe renal impairment, prostatic adenoma, hypercalcaemia, hypokalaemia, diabetes, elderly, asthma. Biphasic anaphylaxis may occur. Pregnancy (assess risk/benefit). Driving/using machines. Contains sodium metabisulfite (E223).
Drug interactions: Caution: Drugs that may sensitise the heart to arrhythmias including digitalis, quinidine, halogenated anaesthetics. Tricyclic antidepressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, catechol-O-methyl transferase inhibitors, fast-acting vasodilators, alpha- and beta-blockers.
