The Irish Academy of Continuing Medical Education (iaCME) is an independent provider of accredited CPD (Continuing Professional Development) for healthcare professionals using e-learning and web-based technologies. It was established and developed to meet current CPD requirements.

As part of the CPD services provided by iaCME, a module on adverse reaction (also known as ADR) reporting has been developed. This module includes a screencast in the training materials that follows, step by step, the entry of details in the IMB online ADR report form. Knowledge of and access to user-friendly  systems that facilitate ADR reporting are important tools for healthcare professionals in their critical role of reporting suspected ADRs, which in turn contribute to the overall knowledge of the safety of a medicine. The IMB welcomes this initiative as a useful resource in helping healthcare professionals to familiarise themselves with the IMB on-line reporting system.

iaCME has also developed a series of CPD modules based on the information and advice for Healthcare Professionals included in the IMB’s Drug Safety Newsletter (DSN). The DSN can be used for practice-based CPD to enhance knowledge in relation to the safety of medicines and to support healthcare professionals in applying learning from the newsletter to their individual practices. This resource is offered free of charge to healthcare professionals and may be accessed via the iaCME website (www.iacme.ie) or a dedicated link on the IMB website (www.imb.ie) under ’Human Medicines-Resources for Healthcare Professionals’.

In the case of the CPD modules based on the IMB’s DSN, there is a downloadable certificate awarded which is accessible on successful completion of a quiz following the read, evaluate and review steps of the process. This personalised certificate is provided to users to reflect the CPD activity and acts as a record. The certificate is also customised to each specific edition of the DSN.

The e-learning activities available via iaCME have up to now been accredited under the RCGP’s EPASS scheme.   An application for national accreditation for the 2013 editions of the DSN is now underway with professional training bodies in Ireland.

Further information is available from the iaCME website (http://www.iacme.ie/)
